mental ray in Round 6

Check out this awesome short film by Snowball Studios called "Round 6". You may think it is a game cinematic, but it's actually a short film intentionally made in the style of a game cinematic:

This is, of course, mental ray in all it's glory, and what I found most interesting about this is that they have a very cool production blog over at http://round6construction.blogspot.com/ where you can read many more details of the project.

Great work guys!

Nice work. I love the short n' sharp animation style on the characters.

Interesting to read their throughts on choice of renderer. Why not use the best of both? Brazil and/or mentalray/vray etc.

Mentalray is great and can do some great things - but slow and painful with workflow and memory management.
I love the SSS phenomenon in MR - but i disagree with using it over something liek brazil or Vray, which have far superior displacment options.

MentalRay tends to always give an overall metallice feel to renders. I can never quite put my finger on it. Everythign always has a slighty coppery feel to it. Strange. even the skin.

I often use MR for various lighitng passes and data - with Brazil as my main solution

What are your thoughts on combining renderers Zapp?

I guess I will speak for dave and if he will think I am off he will correct it.

In general mix and matching different renderers when you have a lot of displacement going on is quite difficult.
Each of them is treating it a bit different and sometimes you see this when comping the passes.

Due to the amount of passes handled by mental ray and the fact that he took over the render farm we have decided to limit our selves to mental-ray and fight with the bugs of one beast and not several.

(hair was rendered with the scanline renderer)
